TAG condoles Srirang Narvekar’s death

PANJIM: Srirang Pandurang Narvekar, though coming from Marathi dramas was held in high respect by tiatr artistes and lovers for his valuable contribution to Goan tiatr.

Narvekar passed away on March 12 of a heart attack. He was 76 years old.

After Goa’s liberation, many dramatic troupes from Mumbai including tiatrs started coming to Goa to stage shows. A major hurdle for them was the absence of established theatres in Goa at that time.

During this time Srirang Narvekar being an actor realized the need for infrastructure to stage performances and erected temporary pandals at Mapusa and Panjim, wherein thousands of tiatrs were staged.

These temporary pandals popularly known as ‘Narvekaracho Mattov’ benefited tiatr lovers from Bardez and Tiswadi which has seen tiatr stalwarts like J P Souzalin, Souza Ferrao, Anthony Mendes, C Alvares, Alfred Rose, M Boyer and Nelson Afonso, among others, performing their tiatrs.

Although starting with Marathi dramas he subsequently became one of the strongest supporters of Konkani tiatrs and never differentiated between Marathi Natak artistes and Tiatr artistes which rates him as a true cultural activist of Goa.

Besides being a writer he has contributed to agitations in order to safeguard the interest of Goa and Goans such as the Opinion Poll, the language agitation, etc. He has also written a book in Konkani in Roman Script ‘Mhaji Russia-chi Bhonvdi’ besides his Marathi publications.

A recipient of the Goa State Cultural Award and Kala Academy’s Ranga Puroskar Award, Tiatr Academy has also conferred on him TAG’s prestigious Lifetime Contribution to Tiatr Award in December 2011.

On behalf of the tiatr fraternity and tiatr lovers, Tiatr Academy expresses deep grief over the death of Srirang Narvekar and expresses heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family.
