Painting on energy conservation
PANJIM: State-level painting competition was held at Shree Bodgeshwar temple Sabhagraha, Mapusa, at which six paintings were selected for national level painting competition on energy conservation-2013. This contest was conducted at three levels ~ school, state and national level.
District Collector, North, Mihir Vardhan was the chief guest and said this is a platform for children to show their hidden talents and skills through painting and also to raise awareness on issues of energy conservation. He later distributed the prizes to winners.
A K Sharma, Nodal Officer for this event said that Powergrid has been organizing this competition for the last 7 years. The jury consisted of A V Powar, Director (education), Mahesh Vengurlekar, Principal, Goa College of Arts, Dominic Cordo, Asst Prof Goa College of Arts, Kishore Kumar, Principal, Kendriya Vidyalaya, INS Mandovi and A K Sharma.

Animal available by auction
PANJIM: Directorate of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Pashusamvardhan Bhavan, Patto, Panjim has informed that 20 surplus and uneconomical animals (Red Sindhi and Murrah male and female) are available for sale at Government Livestock Farm, Dhat, Mollem. Interested farmers may inspect the animals between 9 am to 11 am and 2.30 pm to 5 pm. The allotment of surplus animals will be on first come first served basis.
Interview for post of Home Guards
PANJIM: The oral interview of candidates for enrolment of 820 Home Guards has been fixed from November 18 to December 17 at Goa Police Administrative Block, GRP, Near College of Art, Altinho, Panjim. Annual special camp held
PANJIM: The second annual special camp of Government College of Commerce, Margao was held at Govt College, Quepem from November 6 to 12, and was inaugurated by Prof S N Patil Govt College, Quepem.
During the camp, there was physical work, interactive sessions, cultural programmes and a hike to Chandshewar Parwat. About 45 volunteers accompanied by 3 teachers attended the camp. The resource personnel at the camp were Chamin Pereira, Prof Asha Mangutkar, Dr Reyna Sequeira, Dr Santosh Patkar. Principal of Govt College, Quepem Prof Bhaskar Nayak was the chief guest at the valedictory function.
Crib contest by Art and Culture dept
PANJIM: The annual crib contest by the Directorate of Art and Culture will be organized at State-level from December 26 to 30, in two categories ~ Institutions/Group and Individuals/Household. The winners will be awarded cash prizes.

CD on advances in medicine released
PANJIM: The Goa Medical College Bambolim in collaboration with Indian Academy of Cytologists released a CD on recent advances in medicine on male genital system. Tripurari Purnima boat festival
PANJIM: Goa Tourism in association with Art and Culture department will celebrate Tripurari Purnima boat festival at Vithalapur, Sanquelim, on November 17.
The event will be attended by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar, Minister for Art and Culture Dayanand Mandrekar, Minister for Information and Publicity Milind Naik, Chairman GTDC & MLA Nilesh Cabral and Deputy Speaker Anand Shet. Booklet on preterm babies released
PANJIM: The Indian Foundation for Premature Babies (IFPB) observed World Prematurity Day by unveiling the first action report on preterm birth in India ~ ‘Delivered Too Soon’ highlighting the Indian scenario of preterm births and India’s commitment towards improving the neo-natal health conditions. Minister for Health Laxmikant Parsekar, Parimal Rai, Principal Secretary and Sanjeev Dalvi Director of Health Services, unveiled the report at Goa Medical College and Hospital. Organizations like World Health organization, Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Still-births, Save the Children, Ministry of Child Health & Family Welfare, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have contributed in this report. IFPB had also organized an exhibition of compelling pictures of preterm children at the college. Parsekar informed that Goa has the lowest infant mortality rate at 11 and said that Goa was awarded on two occasions in the health sector as it had the best fixed parameters in this sector. In Goa, the situation is comparatively better than the rest of India, he added. Dr MP Silveira, Head of Paediatric Department gave an overview of the various factors leading to prematurity and remedies to achieve better survival of the premature babies.

4-day calligraphy workshop
PANJIM: The Directorate of Art and Culture will be organizing a calligraphy workshop by Achyut Palav, a world renowned calligrapher and a master of modern Calligraphy, based in Mumbai. The workshop is being organized in memory of legendary Goan artist late Xantaram Amonkar. Foreigner hurt in accident
CALANGUTE: A foreign national was grievously injured in a road accident at Nagoa on Friday.
According to reports, the foreign national was riding a Bullet motorcycle when he accidentally hit a rickshaw. The injured foreigner was later rushed to a nearby hospital in a 108 Ambulance.
Locals have expressed concern over growing number of mishaps in the area and have been demanding speed breakers at the site. Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has also taken up the issue, but authorities are yet to respond to their demands.
Dowry harassment case at Revora
PORVORIM: A woman has accused her husband and in-laws of assaulting her and subjecting her to cruelty over demands for dowry.
In her complaint, the woman told Mapusa police that her husband, mother-in-law and another woman, all from Revora had demanded dowry from her since November 23, 2009, and had subjected her to cruelty and harassment, besides assaulting her.
The Mapusa Police has registered the offence under Sections 494, 498-A, r/w 34 IPC and PSI C R Gawas is investigating the case.
Three accused of theft at Quepem
CURCHOREM: Three persons attached to a construction company have been accused of stealing equipment worth about Rs 1 crore at Ambaulim-Quepem.
According to Quepem police, a civil engineer of the company filed a police complaint stating that the labour contractor, mechanical maintenance supervisor and civil supervisor stole MS pipes and reinforcement steel worth Rs 1 crore from the stock yard of the company sometime between March and November 3, 2013.
Eight saved from drowning
CANACONA/CALANGUTE: A man was rescued while he was attempting to commit suicide at Agonda beach, while seven Indian tourists were rescued from drowning in two separate incidents at Calangute and Baga.
According to Drishti reports, a youth from Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) entered a non-swim zone at Agonda beach on Thursday at about 3.15 pm. Even though a lifeguard advised him to come close to the shoreline, he did not pay any heed to the lifeguard and kept on moving deeper into the sea.
The lifeguard rushed towards him with a rescue tube and tried to secure the victim, but he refused to hold on to the rescue tube claiming that he had planned to commit suicide.
The lifeguard then alerted the tower and a Jetski was rushed to the site. The youth was brought ashore and admitted that he wanted to end his life due to some family problem. A police team later took him to the Canacona Police Station for further investigation.
In the second incident, a group of about 70-80 tourists from Gujarat were in a non-swim zone at Calangute beach on Friday and under the influence of alcohol, when they ignored requests from a lifeguard to shift to a safer zone.
Six tourists then were pulled into the sea due to a rip current and began to gesture for help.
A lifeguard secured four victims with the help of a surfboard while another lifeguard secured two other victims on a rescue tube.
In the third incident, a tourist from Mumbai along with friends entered in a non-swim at Baga beach on Friday noon, when he began to struggle in the deep sea. A lifeguard rescued him and brought him ashore.
Woman dies in mishap
PANJIM: A woman rider was killed in a LCV-bike collision on the Zuari bridge Thursday afternoon. Police arrested one Rosano Vaz, a resident of Fatorda in connection with the case. According to the complaint, Vaz was driving his tempo GA-02-U-7273 towards Margao from Panjim when he allegedly rammed into the Honda Dio scooter GA-06-J-2405 going in the same direction on Zuari Bridge.
The victim identified as Farida Bi Shaikh sustained grievous injuries and was rushed to the Goa Medical College and Hospital for emergency treatment. The police said that she died while undergoing treatment.
A case under sections 279 for rash driving and 304-A (causing death by rash and negligent act) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused.
One killed in hit-and-run case
MARGAO: One Satmesh Prabhu, 42, pedestrian, died after he was knocked down by unknown vehicle on November 14 at around 9.50 pm near Kunde petrol pump, Margao.
Margao police have registered offence of rash and negligent driving causing death against unknown person and further investigation is in progress to trace the vehicle involved in accident.
Offence registered against PI
MARGAO: An offence under section 341, 394, 201, 120B, IPC has been registered against a Police Inspector for allegedly conniving with Amar Talwardkar, ICCI recovery Manager and 4 others at Colva police station on a complaint by Joviet D’Souza of Sernabatim for failure to take action on his complaint and destroying evidence.
D’Souza in his complaint has alleged that on August 6, 2004, then Colva PSI in alleged connivance with Talwardkar and 4 others wrongfully restrained him on Sernabatim-Colva road when he was travelling in his Uno car and forcibly took away the keys of the car. Further, he claimed that when he filed a complaint with the police, then PSI failed to take action and also accused him of destroying evidence. D’Souza later approached higher authorities who advised him to file fresh complaint.
Police seize dumped coke, machinery
PONDA: Collem police seized machinery and coke dumped in a plot at Barkatte-Mollem on Friday evening.
According to Collem police, one screening machine, one wheel loader and heaps of coke dumped within a radius of about 40 to 50 meters in a plot at Barkatte-Mollem have been seized. Collem police said the coke dumps were in various forms, including one heap of coke lump, three heaps of semi-fine coke, two heaps of fine coke and raw coke.Collem police claimed that the activity seems to have started recently and the material was brought to the place from an unknown location. Suspecting it to be an illegal activity as no one had come forward to claim the seized material, Collem police has written to the Mines Department regarding the seizure of material, for further inquiry in the matter. Collem PSI Lokre is investigating the case.
