Teacher gets further remand
CANACONA: The high school PE teacher of Canacona arrested on charges of kidnapping a minor schoolgirl from the same school was further remanded to five days police custody. According to Canacona Police, the accused, who whose earlier four days police remand by JMFC Canacona got over on Sunday, was again produced in the Children’s Court, that remanded him to five days police custody.

It may be recalled that acting on the complaint of the girl’s father, the PE teacher accused of kidnapping the girl student was arrested by Canacona Police under Section 363 IPC and was also charged under Section 8 of Goa Children’s Act.
One accused of outraging modesty
CALANGUTE: A resident of Saligao has been accused of outraging the modesty of a 15-year-old girl at Calangute.
According to Calangute Police, the girl’s father complained that on February 14, the accused outraged the modesty of his daughter. Calangute Police have registered the case under Section 354-B IPC and Section 8 (a) of Goa Children Act 2008 and Section of POCSO Act 2003. PSI Halarnkar is investigating the case.
Theft case registered
OLD GOA: Old Goa Police arrested a man on charges of stealing cash and goods from a shop at Bainguinim.
According to Old Goa Police, Deelip Naik of Bainguinim complained that on Saturday, accused Akash Salgaonkar and another person stole cigarettes, biscuits, spray and cash of Rs 400, all worth Rs 5,000, from his shop at Bainguinim. Old Goa Police arrested the accused Akash and recovered the stolen property. Police is investigating.
PMC?files complaint
PONDA: A member of a sports club in Ponda has been accused of tearing a notice pasted by Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) on the main door of the club house.
According to Ponda Police, PMC Chief Officer Johnson Fernandes complained that on Friday, accused person trespassed into the property belonging to PMC and replaced lock which was put by the council on the main door of the club house, which was erected illegally in an open place near I D Hospital Ponda by a sports club.
The chief officer further stated that the accused tore the notice pasted on the main door of the club house. Police is investigating the case.
Andhra native assaulted
TIVIM: A 74-year-old native of Andhra Pradesh was assaulted and robbed of cash of Rs 15,000 at Baga-Arpora.
According to Anjuna Police, Mohan Gondla complained that the incident occurred on February 15 when two unidentified person restrained him at knife point and robbed cash of RS 15,000. The complainant further stated that the accused assaulted him with knife, causing him injuries. PSI R C Shinde is investigating the case.
Arpora restaurant damaged in fire
CALANGUTE: Property worth Rs 8 lakh was gutted in a fire at a restaurant at Arpora on Monday. The fire broke out at about 12.30 pm in the restaurant belonging to Sandesh Pilarnkar. Fire personnel rushed to the site, but the damage was already done. The Mapusa Fire Station officials claimed that they were able to save property worth Rs 2 lakh. Arpora-Nagoa acting Sarpanch Joseph Fernandes along with panchas also visited the site and took stock of the situation.
Nigerian held with drugs
TIVIM: Anjuna Police arrested a 28-year-old Nigerian national on charges of possessing Cocaine worth Rs 50,000 at Vagator. According to Anjuna PI Paresh Naik, acting on a tip-off that some person will deliver a consignment of Cocaine (5 grammes), the police laid a trap and nabbed Chidi Okonkwo. “We also recovered two mobile phones. The accused had one NDPS and overstaying case registered against him,” informed PI Naik.
Baina local’s bail plea rejected
MARGAO: South Goa District and Sessions Judge Nutan Sardesai on Monday rejected the bail application of Neves Rodrigues, resident of Kanten, Baina who has been in custody in connection with a case of stabbing. The accused who was arrested by Vasco police after altercation with his wife Mohit Vinod Oza whom he abused with filthy language, stabbed her with a knife and also assaulted his mother-in-law Cecilia D’Mello. Public prosecutor Subash Desai argued before the court that investigation was in the primary stage although the police had attached the knife used in committing the crime. He further stated that there was fear that if the accused was released on bail he may attack the victims again.
Jharkhand native convicted
MARGAO: South Goa Additional District and Sessions Judge Vincent D’Silva on Monday held guilty accused Vinod Soren, 25, hailing from Jharkhand for homicide not amounting to murder. The sentence will be pronounced on Tuesday. It is the case of the prosecution that accused Soren who was staying in a rented room at Batpal, Canacona along with deceased Nirmala Gawda, hailing from Karnataka suffocated her resulting in her death.
No breakthrough in murder case
MARGAO: There has been no breakthrough in the brutal murder of middle-aged rag picker whose body was found near Apollo hospital, Malbhat, Margao on February 16. Margao DySP Mohan Naik told the media that no identity proof was found on the body, but he hastened to add that the name Raju and Deepak was found tattooed on the deceased’s arms. It was further informed that around 25 labourers were rounded up and interrogated by the Margao police but that no one has yet been detained or arrested.
Gynaecology consultation camp
PANJIM: Dr Sharmila Prabhudesai, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist will be conducting a free gynaecology consultation camp from February on 18 to 20, at Lulu’s Nest building, behind Goa Board of Education, near Vidhyaprabhodini School, Porvorim, between 11.30 am to 1 pm. Consultation will be by prior appointment only.
OL of Candelaria feast at Pilerne
PANJIM: The annual feast of Our Lady of Candelaria will be celebrated on March 2, at Candelaria Chapel, Pilerne. The ‘Fama’ will be on February 20 at 5 pm, followed by mass. From February 21, the Novena services will begin at 5 pm with the Rosary and mass. The feast masses will be celebrated at 7.15 am, 9.30 am and 12.15pm. The 9.30 am mass will be celebrated by Fr Tomas Lobo, parish priest of Holy Family Church, Porvorim, along with Fr Francisco X Pereira, parish priest of Pilerne. At 6.30 pm there will be a tiatr ‘Hem Amchem Ghor’ written and directed by comedian Agostinho which will be staged by the side of the chapel.
Shiv Jayanti at Ponda on Feb 19
PONDA: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will pay floral tributes to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, on the occasion of Shiv Jayanti celebration, at Farmagudi fort, Ponda, on February 19 at 9 am.
This was informed at a news conference by Information Director Swapnil Naik, Deputy Director Sahadev Arondekar, John Aguiar and Bandora Sarpanch Sulaksha Naik.
Parrikar along with PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, Industries Minister Mahadev Naik, Minister for Cooperation Deepak Dhavalikar, Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar and local representatives will be present for the function.
Parrikar and other guests will address the gathering followed by keynote address on life and work of Shivaji by historian from Pune Mahesh Tendulkar.
Various programmes like quiz competition, monologue and fancy dress contest will be organised on the occasion.
Savoikar kicks off LS poll campaign
PONDA: Law Commission Chairman Adv Narendra Savoikar, who is tipped to be the BJP candidate for South Goa Lok Sabha seat, campaigned in Khadbaband-Ponda on Sunday. Savaikar along with his party supporters appealed to the people to vote for the party with their new slogan ‘Ek Note Kamal Pe Vote.’ Asked whether he was declared officially as the party candidate, Savoikar said he is campaigning to support the party to bring party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi to power. “I am moving from house to house and people have expressed their wishes for Modi to see him as prime minister. People have made up their minds and we are getting good response,” he said. PMC Vice President Shantaram Colvekar, Councillor Vishwanath Dalvi and others took part in the campaign.
Corner stones laid for 3 schools
MAYEM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar laid the foundation stone for three new school buildings in Bicholim taluka. The first one was for a government higher secondary school at Sanquelim, which will be constructed in place of the old one. Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant, SMC councillor Upendra Karpe and others were present.
The next foundation stone was for government high school at Surla. The third foundation stone was for a new government School.
House donated to homeless family
BICHOLIM: The Dhawlikar Trust Ponda donated a house to a homeless family at Mayem-Bicholim. In an informal function on Sunday, the keys were handed over to the family. MGP Mayem Block President Milind Pilgaonkar handed over the keys to the Maienkar family. It may be recalled that the hut belonging to Gurudas Maienkar was damaged and his seven-member family was staying under a thatched roof.
Arossim arterial road being carpeted
DABOLIM: Minister for Forest and Environment Alina Saldanha inaugurated the hot mixing of road from Hotel Park Hyatt, Arossim, to Pale Junction, Upasnagar.
This is a major district road and is the main arterial road passing through villages of Arossim, Cansaulim and Velsao, states a press note. Speaking in the presence of Cansaulim Sarpanch Josita Cardozo and local panchas, Saldanha said good motorable roads are an aid to good health of the citizens and ailments like spondylitis and backaches are kept at bay.
