 Strength of a woman

Maria Viency Cardozo
March 8 a significant day for women of all ages and from all places. It is a feeling of pride when contributions of women are recognized internationally, nationally, locally.
At home, our families would be meaningless without the loving touch of a mother and a sister. How magnificent is the gift of motherhood entitled only to a woman! Long hours of sleepless nights of feeding when hungry, and watching with worry when the child is sick, waiting with eager eyes when coming back from school. Can a mother’s heart be compared to any other? A salute to all mothers’  yesterday, today, tomorrow.
Her sacrifices and services surely cannot be repaid. But during her old days when she is aged and feeble, tired and cold, our concern and care for can repay her manifold.
Women as mothers have conquered the world through selfless giving – so also women have forged ahead and forayed into terrains of hardship and surged on.
Women as professionals have moved into much dominated male arenas – be it politics, medicine and the sciences, in the armed forces and as tough non-fearing journalists on war-fronts.
But every aspect of life has a bitter-sweet tale to it. If the world raises a toast to women, there are many women who are repressed and exploited.  In Goa, reports of child abuse and sexual assault still fill up our dailies. This is a grim reality for hundreds of women today, let us remember them.
Continuing a fight for women’s rights globally is vital. Why should they be shame faced, sorrowed, scared. Secrecy is hardly the solution.
Instead support systems, in the form of NGOs, church organizations, family centers can go a mile in giving a just direction to women in pain and distress.
Let us not cut this spirit of a woman. As a mother, sister, daughter, wife and girlfriend. Let us not destroy the strength of a woman as your boss, leader, and a guide. Instead let us be thankful for the myriad blessings that are found only through a woman!
We salute them!
