The news of the death of former President Abdul Kalam is shocking. Having once met him for a few minutes I have short but sweet and unforgettable memories of this meeting. A picture with him will always be in my personal library, so powerful was his impact on me. He was the man of the century (after Independence). His vision of life was more than that of a true scientist. He was a non-political person who understood the nation’s problems better than anyone else. He had solutions too. But alas our politicians and people did not follow his directions. His life, even in the highest post of India, was simple. He loved children and was against wasteful expenditure in all spheres of life. His understanding of personal freedom of the citizens and Indian principles and customs was more than anyone else. He was against antique customs of life in society. If there was a true statesman – after Gandhiji – it was Dr Abdul Kalam.
