When Dr APJ Kalam passed away, the Union government took the right step by declaring a week-long national mourning, but no holiday. It was the great man’s wish that no holiday be declared upon his demise – rather, an extra hour of work be done.
But some State governments declared a holiday, and this is not good as the departed soul’s wish has not been fulfilled. Even Parliament was adjourned after obituary references (as has been the convention). It would have been good if Parliament would have reconvened after adjournment for a few hours, to enable members to pay homage at 10, Rajaji Marg and then start business as usual. Even State Assemblies like Goa Assembly were adjourned, and this was a clear violation of Dr Kalam’s wish. Dr Kalam was a truly noble soul who strove during his whole life for the nation. If we walk upon his path, it would be true homage to him.
