This is with reference to ‘Other voices’ by Wilson Mazarello (Herald, August 14 edition) titled ‘Romki Konknni leaders sold us off’. It is true, but Christians don’t like to speak Konknni nowadays. When I visit my old neighbours, their grandparents, who used to speak and read in Romi Konknni, now converse in poor English. They are not even aware that Konkani newspaper and three magazines are being published in Goa. Previously, Goa Times, Cine Times, Goenchim Kirnam, Goa Mail, Uzvadd, Goykar, Potbimb (Magazine) were published in Goa/Mumbai. These newspapers and magazines closed down for want of Romi readers. Presently, even the fate of Gulab, Goan Review and Jivit is somewhat the same. Parents should encourage their children to read Romi Konkanni. Otherwise, it may die. We cannot blame Romi Konknni leaders.
