Governor, a hope of ray
In the present administrative paralysis and collapse in good governance which Goa has been witnessing, we look forward to Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai as our ray of hope. Goa is currently facing so many crucial issues and we expect that Governor Pillai will be very proactive and analyze all issues brought before him in-depth and from all angles.

We hope that our Governor with an open mind would bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India in discharging his duties, while being non-partisan and maintaining highest standards in public life.
Goa is a very small state and the Governor must strive to lift it from its current morass. As a no nonsense Governor he must endeavour to govern with utmost integrity and with clarity in the best interests of the State and its people. Despite currently having a government in power that is ruling recklessly having failed to deliver the promises made and needs of the people, let us have the trust, belief and the conviction that there is a better life, a better Goa, beyond the horizon and that there is hope that Goa sees some light at the end of this long dark tunnel. That hope springs eternal.

True spirit of Goa saves a life
With reference to “Woman rescued from a well in Vasco” (Herald December 15, 2021). Tears did not dry up for a while. Imagine the plight of a woman inside a dark well. She screamed for help. She was heard by people around the well. They alerted the fire brigade department while undertaking efforts to rescue the trapped the hapless woman into a well.
What would have happened had the unlucky woman lost her bearings upon falling into this well while plucking flowers? This thought sends a shiver down the spine. Having said this, a massive thank you to the good Samaritans of Vasco who left no stone unturned to save a precious life. Goa is different. People of Goa are different. They care for each other. This is the true spirit of Goa and Goans. Well done.

Right to know food ingredients
In a significant move it is learnt the Delhi High Court on Tuesday mandated all restaurants in the national capital to provide details of the ingredients used in their food items so as to enable every citizen to know what he/she is eating under the Right to Information Act (RTI).
The court maintained that it should also be fairly disclosed as to what is the plant source or animal source or if manufactured in a laboratory as the case may be, of all ingredients irrespective of the percentage in the food article.
It is a step in the right direction as those who eat in the restaurants need to know what they are consuming especially if one is a strict vegetarian. It also seems necessary for the restaurant to mention the kind of oil that is being used in the cooking. It is important for the customer who is a strict vegetarian to know as to whether the oil is from a plant or animal source. All this information could be included in the menu presented to the customer seated at the table. The customer will then be in a better position to select the dish of his/her choice keeping in mind one’s health as well as doctor’s recommendation on proper diet and other criteria. As of now customers could be in the dark as to what is being consumed at the dining table in the restaurants except for the name of the dish unlike home-cooking where each ingredient is as per one’s choice.

Justice for the Lakhimpur farmers
Almost a month after an UP junior minister’s son and his cohorts were arrested for mowing down four farmers sitting in peaceful protest at Lakhimpur Kheri, the SIT constituted for probing the incident has unequivocally concluded that the cold-blooded act was premeditated, pre-planned and deliberate, not an accident as the defense is trying to portray it.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court has now sought to add various other stringent acts under the IPC, viz Sec 302, 147, 328,148, 149, 279, 388, 304a, 120b and the Arms Act to the case against the accused. Despite empty cartridges being found in the accused’s SUV and eyewitnesses corroborating their presence at the scene of crime, the father-son duo have been trying to brazen it out; this manner of wilful murder by a powerful politician’s progeny is a new low even by the shamefully low (non) standards of law and order in the badlands of UP.
As a first step the minister should be immediately removed from his post to prevent him from materially influencing and intimidating witnesses, the trial should be fast tracked under a dedicated court and the guilty be given exemplary punishment. It is only then that the victims family shall get some semblance of a sense of closure. Justice should not only be done but should also seen to be done, hopefully the judgement shall serve as a deterrent to other potential political criminals.

You have given us (seamen), an assurance, that you will give our 19 months seamen pension pending money from November 2019 to May 2021. But still you have not given us our money in this difficult pandemic situation. We are in great difficulties. You are well-aware of the difficulties of senior citizens in their old age time.
Now as elections are nearing, hope you will see this matter and solve our difficulties as earliest before election.

Many reports in the media say that Omicron is fast becoming the dominant coronavirus variant, with a few cases now being detected in India.
It is important now to introduce the booster dose — like 30 other countries have — to prevent further outbreaks and loss of lives. Many people are seen wearing their masks on their chin and neck without covering their nose and mouth properly. Such careless behaviour will only lead to a spike in corona cases.
Even if you have taken both the doses of the corona vaccine, it is necessary to follow the corona rules. Vaccination controls corona, but we need to follow the rules to stop the virus from spreading further.

Internet gaming disorder in children
The internet gaming disorder (IGD) among children and adolescents has become an important public concern. Minors are known to be particularly susceptible to problematic internet gaming use owing to age-related underdevelopment of cognitive control. Gaming can trigger feelings of irritability in some kids. It can also lead to power struggles, meltdowns, and sneaky behavior.
Today these these online games are easily accessible to children and are played on devices like computers, tablets and mobiles connected with the internet. These games are designed in such a way that they excite the player to the extent of passion to play further. Playing online games with no restriction and self-limits leads many players to become addicted and are eventually diagnosed with gaming disorder. The gaming companies also emotionally compel the child to buy more levels and almost force in-app purchases.
The prolonged closure of schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic has increased the use of mobile and internet by children and ultimately online gaming addiction. Recently the Union Ministry for Education shared advisories for parents and teachers with respect to online gaming and the threats it can pose towards children if they are not monitored.
