Muthalik is a loud-mouthed demagogue. His rise to notoriety was because of an incident happened in Mangalore a few years ago. The members of his outfit beat up some young persons who were enjoying at a party. This self-styled moral brigade was booked and the case is still going on.
When the incident occurred the present writer had written a piece condemning the actions of Muthalik and his goons. Muthalik has little or no support in his native state. He contested against the BJP candidate in the last general election and lost miserably. To remain in the lime-light he makes irresponsible statements (there is a growing crop of such individuals in Goa as well as outside Goa).
After the Mangalore incident, he could not or did not enact another incident of the type. Some Goans fear that if he is allowed to operate in Goa, there can be problems. Do not we have a government here that can tackle him? If he breaks the law he will face the music.

Centre rightly slammed
Chief Justice of India R.M.Lodha has very rightly slammed the Narendra Modi government for having compromised the independence of the judiciary in rejecting a unanimous recommendation by the collegium of Supreme Court judges.
In a clear affront to the Judiciary the Government malafiedly and high-handedly plotted to sideline a very distinguished jurist Gopal Subramanium from being a Supreme Court Judge. Much as this government may crave to manipulate the judges it should realize that the judiciary is not an extended wing of the government and should not even attempt to make it one.
With the dark days looming, the very sanctity and independence of the judiciary is at stake. If the judiciary is reduced to a mouth piece of the government the Courts will lose all relevance if they end up as dens of chicanery and jugglery.
The judiciary should not be manned by persons who are tilted or aligned to any political party. Judges should have the spine to crack on illegalities done by politicians regardless of the high positions they hold. If judges cannot independently balance the scales of justice, the temples of justice become meaningless and should rather be shut down.

Zuari bridge
I am amused to read the press statement of Mr. Rane, the leader of the opposition, appearing on your daily of 1st July, 2014 that “he is frightened to travel on Zuari Bridge”. What was the Congress government doing when they were in power for two terms. By saying that he had proposed a new Zuari Bridge when he was CM between 2005 and 2007, but the file has not moved. By saying so he cannot absolve of his responsibility. Moreover the Centre was also ruled by Congress government and hence the file should have moved faster if the then CM had hotly pursue it.
Modi on his first visit to Goa recently was quick enough to understand the gravity of the Zuari Bridge and said that the new Bridge should come soon, otherwise North will remain North and the South will remain South. But I have to differ here. There is danger of North merging with Maharashtra but South will always remain South in view of the fact of history, the South fought valiantly during the Opinion Poll. Hence I request our Hon. PM to give a go ahead to construct the bridge on top priority.
