During the past few days our nation witnessed two incidents that have anguished the conscience and traditional thinking of an Indian mind. Demise of the most beloved, popular and forward thinking former President of India was sudden and unexpected. He was on a cherished mission of inspiring the youth of this country, in his own inimitable style of relentless working; motivating the young minds to achieve greater glory and heights in scientific outlook and national feelings. He was indeed the best of India, Islam and humanity.
Before we could recover from that shock, our nation had to undergo another painful agony as the highest court in the country found Yakub Memon’s crime unpardonable, and to punish with death – the worst of the kind. This agonizing incident was against the spirit and teachings of all religions of India and yet had to be inflicted for the sake of bringing justice for the victims of terror acts in the country.
It is a strange coincidence that the righteous and the darkest of individuals meeting their end more or less simultaneously. The nation has to carry forward the unfinished mission of the brightest of the Indian mind and also have to remember the lessons learnt from the long winding and intrinsic judicial process in awarding a deserving punishment to a terrorist. The sagacity and capability of the nation have been put on test and we can only hope that the citizens of this country will be wiser and mentally stronger to face such situations in future.
