It is understood that traffic cops will be seen more frequently at roads near the educational institution as well as in rural areas in order to keep a check on the underage and unlicensed drivers/ riders. With road accidents claiming the lives of so many young people, this is a step in the right direction.
In this context it is seen that many of the youth ride two wheeler recklessly even when they possess just a ‘learner’s license’. It is pertinent to note that it is quite easy to get a ‘learner’s license’. One only has to give an oral test wherein he/she has to learn the road-signs. No test is conducted to see whether the applicant of the learner’s license can actually ride a two-wheeler or drive a four-wheeler.
It seems necessary to make a driving-test mandatory for applicants of the learner’s license as well. It is also necessary for those riding with a learner’s license to have a pillion rider who possesses a complete driving license and the vehicle should have an “L” mark in bold letter. Many a times this requirement is not adhered to by the holder of the learning-license.
The cops should also check if the rider/driver possesses just a learner’s license and whether all the requirements are adhered to. They (the traffic cops) need to be very strict while checking the underage and unlicensed drivers/ riders on the roads.
