Goans have celebrated the feast of St. Jose Vaz with pomp and devotion. The canonization of Jose Vaz has brought a lot of joy to the hearts of Goans. The Catholic church has several saints. But the question to be asked is what do the saints actually mean to the faithful? Why does the Catholic Church have so many saints? The church teaches us that saints intercede for us before the Almighty God. Hence the faithful put their petition to the saints and pray fervently for their prayers to be answered. But the role of saints does not end with this. Saints are to be considered as role models so that the faithful live their lives by following in the foot-steps of the saints. Besides the various miracles that the saints have conducted during their lifetime and continue to do so, every saint has lived a unique life, a life of prayer, sacrifice and service to the fellow being and a life of proclaiming the good news. Hence every Catholic is expected to live their lives influenced by the life the saints lived. But then we Catholic can follow in the footsteps of the saints only if we read about their life. Frankly speaking how many of us Catholic read books on the life of the saints? We need to develop the habit of reading such books so that we are aware of the sacrifices these saints have made in their lifetime and live our lives accordingly. The priest may mention some aspects about the life of the saint in the homily. But then we need to see that the saints have a profound influence on us and one way of doing this is by making it a habit to read the books relating to the saints besides praying to them for interceding in our petitions.
