Vacant engineering seats causing concern

All the rounds of admission to the 5 engineering colleges of Goa are over and it was most unpleasant to note that a whopping 194 of the total 1230 seats are vacant. A lot of these seats are from the RIEIT, Shiroda.
That apart, it is observed that there are no takers for a lot of seats in the Information Technology. It is unfortunate that this section which was introduced amidst massive worldwide IT wave more than a decade ago has been steadily dwindling. In fact there was no need for this separate section of engineering which was well accommodated within the section of Computer Engineering.
This year it is observed that even in the famed Computer Engineering section some seats have remained vacant for similar reasons and moreover this branch is offered by all the colleges, resulting in too many seats. Needless to say there should be tough competition between the students for entry to professional colleges. Without that, the quality of higher education would steadily get lowered.
