Yoga – Surya Namaskar

This refers to the article, “Is Yoga losing its true meaning and flavor” by Dr. Francisco Colaco, in Herald dated 1 June 2015.
Why hold a bias for Yoga for its symbolic and mythic overtones of Hindu ideology, Surya Namaskar, namely SUN-worship, when the religion of Christianity is itself a reminder of many borrowed pagan myths and traditions?  Here’re a few examples: “Christmas” – Birth of SUN at Winter Solitice; Osiris-Dionysus-Mithra-Jesus, the SUNS of Righteousness, Mithra – the Lord of SUNday; the “Halo” – the fertility symbol of the SUN’s rays (e.g. Krishna-Jesus-Saints); the ‘Disks of SUN-rays” – on the Catholic alters; Images with straight and wavy SUN-rays for male and female deities; the same SUN-rays engraved at the center of the “Monstrance”, and the shinning silver plate in the form of the SUN; the “Eucharistic Host” – depicting the SUN (the Host of Heavens); and not the least the Cross – the Zodiac symbol of the SUN, of life and fertility and an ornament since the birth of civilizations – Sumeria, India, Egypt, Syria and Persia. We are a multicultural and multi-religious society. To be truly tolerant, we must be aware of our history.
