It makes amusing reading the news: “Congress panel to meet on July 2” in O’Heraldo dt 26/06/14 to analyze the reasons behind the defeat of Congress party in Parliamentary elections.
Similar exercise was conducted when the Congress was totally routed in 1999 with promises to revamp the party organization but nothing happened. This time also it may be another exercise in futility if Congressmen have no change of heart placing the national interests above those of the party and self. The reasons behind the debacle of Congress are known to everyone: unbridled corruption, scams, self enrichment, nepotism, family raj and arrogance etc. The remedy will not lie in only finding out the causes, but in true repentance wherein all these Congressmen will surrender half or at least one third of their ill gotten wealth to the nation – to the poor.
Besides the Congress will need a re-organization with honest, responsible and dedicated leaders who will think of the Nation above party and self. Even after the party’s rout Sonia Gandhi does not seem to have learnt any lesson. She refused to corporate with the AA Party recently in Delhi. If Congress had eyes and ears open to see and listen to the protests of the then activists to enact the Lok Pal bill at the Centre and set their own house in order, today the Aam Aadmi Party would not have come into existence. That’s why people throughout India said “enough is enough”.
It is not that the present dispensation is holier than Congress or the Aam Aadmi Party. It is the multiplicity of political parties that have spoilt democracy in India. Parties are literally parting or dividing the people and consequently the nation, following their policy of divide and rule (wherein the rich become richer and the poor poorer), winning votes through various alluring promises like Re 1 per kg of rice, slashing petrol prices as in Goa, bringing down gas prices at election time etc
It is high time we try to experiment party less elections in Indian democracy – an idea which maybe constitutionally unrealistic at present.
