40% of college and higher secondary school boys in Goa watch rape porn and statistically end up watching 86,000 rape videos per day, according to a survey conducted by an NGO named RESCUE Last year.
As per Abhishek Clifford, CEO of RESCUE “76% percent students said that watching rapes leads to the desire to actually rape someone… Rape is increasing in India” and “We are in reality raising an army of rapists, thanks to non-regulation of pornography”
Reports after reports have shown that pornography is the driving force for criminals to commit rape. Whenever we come across rape cases which are discussed and debated in India, efforts are made to curb the crime thru technology, CCTV cameras etc. When the world is propagating the message that prevention is better than cure, how can we ignore pornography which is the driving force behind all crimes against women? How do we cope up with a generation which is being fed with porn videos? The survey further says, on an average, a Goan student watches 28 porn videos a week. Imagine the effect on his mind.
Famous Twain bee -A historian quoted “If you want to forecast and judge the future of any country or community it is by seeing the dreams and aspirations of the youth of that particular nation or community” if we go by this saying, it is really a cause of concern which should make our politicians and leaders stand up and face the problem head on. If the majority of our students and youth’s time is spent on watching porn videos, when will they have the time to dream of taking India to a new high? The society looks upto the new generation to solve the social and economical issues facing the nation. Can we dream of being a super power with such students and youths taking up leadership in a few years? Education Institutes and the life of a student is a phase to prepare him to face the world, to make him ready to take up the challenges which life will throw at him after his college life.
Pornography seeks to confirm that women are objects. It gives an indication that people are capable of being brought and sold in the market. Sex is a commodity which is being exploited for commercial gains. People exploit the weaker sex just to fulfill their economical ambitions.
Why can’t pornography be an election issue. Neither we saw any party taking up in the Lok Sabha elections or do we see it now in Delhi elections or the election for Panjim constituency. Candidates are promising wifi enabled cities, technological advancements etc. Technological advancement is needed, but if this problem of pornography is not addressed, then porn addicted mind will use the same technology for crimes against women.
Isn’t it high time that we recognize this problem as a serious threat to our social fabric? How can we give respect to women when we enjoy seeing her as an object? Is our education system only focusing on producing Professionals or do we need them to be a good human being too, who respects women and not treat her as an object. It is high time that candidates take up pornography as an election issue and try their level best to curb this problem.
