Woman found dead at quarry in Verna
VASCO: A 26-year-old woman was found dead with multiple injuries at a laterite stone quarry behind the police colony in Verna.
According to Verna Police, Renuka Gangavarappu, a native of Andhra Pradesh but residing at Ambaji Nagar, and her husband were employed in the computer section of a factory at Verna Industrial Estate.
Police said Renuka and her husband were involved in an argument at their workplace on Wednesday morning. Renuka later left the factory to attend a training programme in the adjacent building of the factory.
Police further informed that since Renuka had failed to return home on Wednesday night, her husband Ravi filed a missing complaint at the Verna police station.
The police found Renuka’s body with severe head injuries at the laterite stone quarry on Friday morning.
Police informed that the body was sent to the morgue at TB Hospital Margao and since the death has occurred within seven years of marriage, Margao Sub Divisional Magistrate Sangeeta Naik is conducting the inquiry into the death. PI Santosh Desai is investigating the case under the supervision of SDPO Margao.
E-tablets stolen from Ponda school
PONDA: Burglars decamped with 14 e-tablets worth Rs 1.25 lakh from Rajmata Padmavati Soudekar High School at Ramnathi-Ponda.
According to Ponda Police, 65 e-tablets were kept in the school premises for distribution to the students under the government scheme.
Police said the school Headmistress Sunita Parsekar complained that the burglars entered opened the headmistress’ cabin where the tablets were stored and decamped with 14 e-tablets worth Rs 1.25 lakh on Thursday midnight.
Ponda Police pressed finger print expert and dog squad to provide clue. Ponda PI C L Patil said a local had noticed a suspect moving out of the school at midnight and he immediately informed the school staff and police. “The police are likely to get breakthrough in the case,” said PI Patil.
Kerim resident cheated of Rs 50 lakh
TIVIM: A resident of Thorlembhat-Kerim, Pernem, was cheated to the tune of Rs 50 lakh after two persons from the same ward induced her to invest money to build a guesthouse.
According to Pernem Police, Dorothia Tereza complained that from 2006 to 2008, the accused induced her to invest Rs 50 lakh to build a guesthouse and thereafter failed to return the agreed amount to her, thereby cheating her. PSI V Chodankar is investigating the case.
Scooter stolen at Calangute
CALANGUTE: A scooter was reported stolen from a parking place at Porbawado-Calangute.
According to Calangute Police, Manuel Pereira of Porbawado complained that between 8 pm on February 17 and 6 am on February 18, some person stole his scooter and police is investigating the case.
Pilerne man lodges cheating plaint
PORVORIM: A resident of Pilerne has accused five persons of cheating him and taking away his car.
According to Porvorim Police, Tousif Mohammed Momin complained that the five accused persons cheated him and took his car (GA-06-D-9580) and also threatened him with dire consequence. The complainant further stated that the accused have not yet returned his car. PSI Somnath Majik is investigating the case.
Tejpal appears before Sessions Judge
PANJIM: Tehelka’s former editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal was on Friday produced before the North District and Sessions Judge to transfer his trial to another court, as the case against him was chargesheeted before the chief judicial magistrate, on Monday. He is presently lodged at Sada Sub Jail, while his bail application will be heard in Bombay High Court at Goa on March 4.
Police looking out for Mumbai tourist
PANJIM: The Panjim police are looking out for a Mumbai tourist, who failed to return a rented two-wheeler. Savio Machert Platina rented a Honda Activa GA-07-F-3979 at Head Post Office but failed to return it on a fixed date, according to the police complaint filed by ‘rent-a-bike’ owner Ernisto Pires.
Panjim Police said the tourist refused to answer calls from the complainant and has been missing from the place of stay during his holiday in Goa. “We have alerted other police stations across the State as well as our counterparts in Mumbai to trace him. Investigation will also look into whether he was accompanied by more persons in Goa,” said an officer. A case under section 406 of IPC for criminal breach of trust has been registered against him.
Panjim cops probe theft plaint
PANJIM: The Panjim police are investigating a complaint which states that two persons stole cash of nearly Rs 10 lakh from January 2012 till January 13, 2014. Reiner D’Souza, a resident of St Inez alleged that Cleta Fernandes from Quepem and Milson Serrao from Santa Cruz with common intention, made duplicate keys to his office and on different occasions stole cash from his office. Police have registered an offence under sections 381 (theft) and 34 (common intention) of IPC, against them.
Aid accorded to hospital
PANJIM: United Friends of Poriebhatt Charitable and Educational Trust which was formed to lend a helping hand to orphans, disabled individuals and the aged handed over wheelchairs to Sr Judith Fernandes (Head of Dr Roque Fereira Hospital) at the hands of MLA Mickky Pacheco in the presence of Wilfred D’Sa, Nelly Rodrigues, Tony D’Costa and others.
Wilfred D’Sa also handed over a cheque of Rs 10000 to the orphans of the same hospital. Nelly Rodrigues also distributed cheques to the children in aid of their education. Tony D’Costa handed over a cheque to a disabled child who is also suffering from cancer.
Taal at Curchorem today
CURCHOREM: Sanvordem local house of Goa Province of Pilar Fathers will organise ‘Taal’ ~ the 2nd inter-religious harmony event, at Ravindra Bhavan Auditorium, Curchorem, on February 22 at 3.30 pm.

Gitelman syndrome treated at Manipal
PANJIM: Manipal Hospitals Goa recently saved a person who was admitted in a completely paralyzed state. The 55-year-old man, employed at Dona Paula was presented to emergency in complete paralysis coma. On evaluation by Dr Chetan Mudrabettu, Nephrologist, it was found that his sodium and potassium levels were very low, which is a life threatening condition. Subsequently, the patient was diagnosed with a rare condition called-gitelman syndrome. Patient was mechanically ventilated and appropriate treatment was given. Following this, the patient recovered without any residual deficit. Presently patient is back to his duties at his office.
Dance contest at Neura
PANJIM: A State-level single dance competition organized by Shri Dhondeshwar Devasthan, Dandebhatt, Neura will be held on February 27, at Shri Dhondeshwar Devasthan mandap. Sec 144 around Assembly Complex
PANJIM: Order under Section 144 of the CrPChas been issued within a radius of 500 meters around Assembly Complex, Porvorim and the area under Panjim Police Station in view of 6th Session 2014 of the Sixth Legislative Assembly, prohibiting, assembly or collection of five or more persons, the carrying of firearms or weapons of offence such as lathis, swords, daggers or spears, burning of fire crackers near petrol pumps and at the venue of the meetings etc, the use of loudspeakers and the shouting of slogans in any public place, street, road, square, thoroughfare, by-lane or any other open space. The said order shall remain in force from 9 am of March 3, till the assembly concludes on March 7.
Meditation course for children
PORVORIM: Goa Vipassana Samiti will organise its monthly children’s ‘Anapana’ meditation course at Queen Laura, Alto Porvorim, on Sunday from 8 am to 1.30 pm.
Conducted by a trained children’s course teacher, this course is conducted every last Sunday of the month at the same venue and it is only for children aged 8-15. There are no fees to register, as all courses run only on voluntary donations.
