Make arrangements: Crime Branch

PONDA: The Crime Branch investigating into the alleged rice black-marketing racket has now written to the Ponda Civil Supplies Department (CSD), requesting to make arrangements to transport the remaining rice bags from the godown to the civil supplies department yard at Curti-Ponda. Last week, Herald had reported that the Crime Branch was yet to hand over about 277 rice bags to the CSD for disposal. Sources in the CSD at Ponda informed Herald that the Crime Branch hand delivered a request letter asking if the department could provide a loader and transportation for the remaining rice bags, a day after the report appeared in the Herald.

It is learnt that the CSD, in a reply on Monday, has agreed to provide a loader and transport facility, as requested by the Crime Branch. The department has also asked the Crime Branch to carry out the work on June 26.

It may be recalled that after the case was transferred from Ponda police to the Crime Branch, the investigating team on May 15 conducted the panchanama and handed over 358 rice bags, each weighing 50 kilos, from the seized truck to the CSD. According to information, the rice was later sold through the fair price shops. However, rice bags from the godown were not handed over to the CSD.

In November last year, Ponda police had busted a black-marketing racket at Curti-Ponda and had arrested three persons. A truck was seized during the raid and according to panchanama conducted by the Ponda Police; there were 250 rice bags, each weighing 50 kilos. However, it was reported that the number of rice bags had increased to 358 when rice bags were handed over to the CSD at Ponda.

Along with this, the police had also sealed the godown that contained about 277 rice bags and since then, police personnel have been posted outside the godown, two at night and one during the day.

Since the seized commodity was perishable in nature, the then investigating officer had written to the North Goa collector asking permission to dispose off the seized rice. Later based on directives from the North Goa collector’s office, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) collected samples of seized rice and were said to be fit for consumption. Subsequently on April 22, Additional Collector (North Goa) P K Velip Kankar passed an order to dispose off the rice.

While it is not clear as to why there was a delay in handing over the remaining rice bags, it is learnt that the Crime Branch will hand over about 277 rice bags from the godown to the CSD on June 26.
