Accidents do happen in our life when one is not fully conscious and disturbed. A man, who is busy with his mental problem, becomes inattentive to physical things, so he does not make the necessary move to avoid accident and so mishap occurs.
All along our roads, we brush with death for many reasons, such as: Some motorcycle youths desire a show of excitement acts of zooming through the crowded traffic by zigzagging their way while riding. A few riders keep talking on the mobile by clutching it between their ear and shoulder and lose their balance. Drunkards, drive in a smashed state overtaking moving vehicles in rash and negligent way.
Accidents are also caused due to stray cattle as the government cannot provide a decent shelter to the cows, which are revered as Gau Mata. Due to free education shepherds go to school and cattle roam on roads. Our government should create the post of shepherds, for unemployed, uneducated youths, to drive the animals away from roads. Cows and buffaloes stand in the middle of the road like inefficient police; or move on the road in groups as if participating in protest march; or sit down to take ‘suseg’ to their tired legs and act as speed-breakers. There should be some shelter for stray animals like the Home care for the aged and homeless human beings and thus make our roads free from animal hurdles.
It appears that there is failure of Traffic officials, to ensure proper traffic supervision; perhaps, some say that authorities under political pressure are not taking penalizing action for traffic violation. Some even say that if riders soil the cop’s hands with paper having purchasing power, these cops turn harmless and errant vehicles move the wrong way down the one way-street. Road discipline does not come by chance. One has to learn it as one learns to dance.
Our vehicle population has grown by leaps and bounds causing congestion on roads like the feast and zatra crowd in churches and temples. Government is trying to solve such road overcrowding problem by widening of existing roads; which they say, will result in smooth run of increased vehicles and also make it easy for the transportation of goods by shortening its transit time. But such acts will destroy the existing houses; and more in future, as vehicle digit will swell, consequently wiping out the whole village; creating noise pollution; causing psychological and social problems to people’s life. So, highways should not be allowed through villages by tearing down people’s compound walls and change the character of our villages.
Our roads, here and there are in pathetic condition. So, we have to travel through potholes with little road in-between. Some say that roads are spoiled, because of the laying down of utilities; digging or roads by BSNL; electricity department and water supply department without any harmonious management of togetherness among themselves.
On reading the statics of accidents on Goan roads, it looks that Death waits to catch many under the wheels of moving vehicles. So, drive slow, drive safe on Goan roads.
