Are Creative content writers under the threat from Gen AI?

I was first introduced to ChatGPT by my cousin who dropped by my house along with my uncle the other day, for a nice chit-chat. What was expected to be an ordinary conversation turned out to be a most intriguing one about the most popular generative AI of today. Well, let me explain.

After the initial niceties, my cousin, who is well versed with today’s technology, shared his concerns about AI replacing the creative writers of today. I was totally taken aback as to how an intelligence, created artificially, can take over the genre of content writing. He had offered to demonstrate. I gave him a prompt to a story and within seconds the AI could generate a write-up which was almost on the lines of my thinking. It used elaborate language and even added some of its own inputs to make its story more interesting. I then asked the AI to resize the story to a particular word count, which it did it in a matter of seconds. Though this was appreciative, it left me a bit flustered and a question arose as to whether this AI would really overtake a writer’s creative ability. When I asked the Chat GPT the same question it had said that a person’s creativity, critical thinking and emotional intelligence, are less likely to be replaced.

Well, after ample research, I came to know what experts in this line have to say. According to them, AI can never replace creative writers as a writer’s empathy and emotional quotient with which they create a content is far more superior to it. A human touch is always needed to make a write-up more interesting and engaging. Experts also suggest that this tool can be taken as an aid for the betterment of the already existing creative piece and should not be seen as a competitor. If we can recollect, each and every technology breakthrough has had its own apprehensive impact on humanity. For instance, when cooking ovens came in to the market, people had the notion that stove top cooking would soon be replaced by them. This hardly happened! Machines can’t let imagination fly like humans can. They can only process already existing data. Let us take this example on the working of ChatGPT.

To choose the next appropriate word in a poem or a creative article the algorithm has to  scan through millions of sources and based on what it has already learned it does the needful! But creative writers do not choose words that are predictable like the AI. Their work is almost spontaneous decorated with more surprising elements. A human mind is amazing and it’s creativity can surpass all the boundaries of AI.

As the then US president, Ronald Reagan, once said, “There are no constraints on the human mind, no walls around the human spirit, no barriers to our progress except those we ourselves erect!”

All said and done, rest assured, whatever be the speed with which technology is racing in today’s world, it can never replace human creativity, intelligence and empathy. After all, AI is the child of human vision and will remain so; it can never replace the mother!
