Hundreds of national leaders and freedom fighters were arrested and lodged in jails and fake cases were filed against them with no chance for a fair trial. Youth were taken forcibly especially in North India and were forced to undergo vasectomy.
When Article 352 is invoked all the Fundamental Rights except the Right to education stand suspended. With power in the hands of bureaucracy and law enforcing authorities and with no one to question, human excesses became the order of the day. Finally under pressure from the International Community Mrs Gandhi was forced to revoke Emergency in 1977 and fresh general elections were announced.
Emergency of 1975 was part and parcel of the old millenium but pains and agonies are still being felt by the people who underwent horrendous sufferings and by the mothers and sisters who lost their sons/brothers who were forced to undergo vasectomy at youth who later succumbed to death by suicides.
We proudly entered the new millenium at the stroke of midnight of 1st January 2000. 13 years have gone by, India has made steady progress in all fields and is being seen as major super power in the subcontinent next to China. No doubt there has been economic prosperity, but is India really glittering? The answer is no. India is plagued by Corruption which reached its crescendo when scams after scams were unearthed The results of general elections of 2014 clearly showed the manifestations of peoples strong resentment against the then UPA led government by Dr. Manmohan Singh where the Congress party at the national level managed to get just 44 seats not even one tenth required for the post of Leader of the Opposition. Not surprisingly in Goa too, in the last Assembly elections the Congress managed to get just 9 seats.
For the last 2 years India is also plagued by another grave humanitarian crisis rapes. When rapes and gang rapes are taking place in Goa and across India almost every alternate day a question arises Is India a Sovereign country? Do we a Constitution? The world is watching us. Foreign nationals visiting India have been raped in Goa and in other parts of India. It will not be be surprising if the International Community steps in again and asks the Indian Government to take action as appropriate to deal sternly with the rapists.
