The world is on the brink of climate catastrophe. The production of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas according to a United Nations Environment Protection report is going to increase 110% by 2030 and seems to spell the doom for natural law abiding since countries in particular India and Russia are increasing coal production which unlike as per the Paris Agreement commitment is not going to limit the increase of temperature by 1.5 degree Centigrade of the pre-industrial levels but on the contrary is going to lead to the increase in temperature by 2 degrees Centigrade.
This is an alarming trend that should under any circumstance, even at the time when the world is beset by two wars and the times are difficult, lead to major emitters to slash down fossil fuel consumption by undertaking to phase out coal-fired power plants around the world selectively and systematically by pledging that particular coal-fired plants in China, US, European Union and India and wherever coal is used for power generation are going to be closed down one after the other, with replacements by renewable energy like solar power and wind turbines and even safe nuclear power as also slashing on use of petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel and replacing them with electrical vehicles as well as rapidly lead to promoting hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in an emergency like situation as also cutting down heavily on the use of natural gas while saving rain forests and trees which serve as carbon sinks absorbing carbon dioxide.
Climate change is a clear and present and future danger that will turn the world into a furnace that will fuel heat waves and wildfires that has shown and will continue to show that our homes are metaphorically on fire and the reason for it all is human activity which is resulting in the heating of the earth. The human rights of the next generation is at peril with the world not providing them the means of getting cooler ambient temperatures and providing them clean air that is devoid of the greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide which is already the reason why millions of people worldwide are dying due to respiratory diseases and heat waves and its resultant consequences. The projected consequence that the UNEP has put forward should be considered as a warning and emergency action has to be taken to prevent climate catastrophe. The world leaders are meeting in Dubai, UAE from November 30 have their task cut out at the COP 28 summit and should respond by not merely deceptively worded action plans, but by taking pledges to resort to actual action to save the planet earth.
Climate change is at the edge of a precipice and the world should not commit collective suicide. The collective clamour of the people around the world is for the leaders to exercise maximum restraint and resolve to determine that the climate change emergency is a ticking bomb that needs very urgent action so far lacking to mend the ways of leading to prevention of climate catastrophe. Here’s a call for influencers around the world to lobby hard and pressurize action at COP28. Even Pope Francis has called upon the nations of the world to respect nature to prevent climate catastrophe. If we do not heed now, we will perish. A stitch in time saves nine.
