Our country got its constitution in 1950. This draft gives us every right as a citizen of this country to put forth views to get a change. The democracy stated in this constitution is wholly based on two houses of the government, namely a majority party and an opposition party. Elections decide over the mandate for the winning party and the losing party takes the role of the opposition party in the government of that place. The ruling party has its duty to work for welfare of the society, the constituency the Zilla the ward no matter whether they hold their candidate there or not.
The parties in opposition have their role in governing too and strive to get development done bringing development projects in their constituencies. If the ruling party does any mischief of forbidding development in the opposition party constituency than it’s the role of opposition to fight for their rights to get work done in their constituency.

But sadly these days, the opposition Party and MLAs has forgotten their role in this democratic government. Instead of playing the opposition role, they themselves merge with the ruling party and the basic concept of this democratic institution is destroyed. Nobody to oppose no debates or any questioning on the government functioning and its projects. Every decision of the ruling party goes unquestioned and laws are passed blindly with thumping majority. In all this, the loser is the society that has to follow what government imposes on them, and the result is the satyagrahas by people against the government, the revolts and complete loss of faith in the democracy.
Best example is the last draconian exercise of 10 Congress MLAs joining the ruling BJP on the sole reason by saying the words “We are going for Development”.
It was a shame on these MLAs who had forgotten their democratic rights to act as opposition. If no jobs of development can be done while sitting in opposition than sadly I should say the constitution has failed. But this drafted constitution has survived this journey of Indian democracy proves that it still holds good.
Our MLAS has forgotten the role of opposition. In fact they do not have the worth and right to sit for election.
It’s a shame to have a knowledge that development can only be done by merging with ruling party.
These MLAs boast of getting projects worth crores of rupees in their constituencies.
Can we not bring such developments when sitting in opposition?
This election we have to ask our contesting candidates this very question. When we vote we should look at the candidate in such a view that he has the attitude and the will power to serve for the people in a democratic way.
Those MLAs who had jumped in the name of development should be shown the way how democracy runs. Then only we can say we are proud and educated Goans ….Jai Hind.
