Goa Windsurfer Katya Coelho Selected for 2026 Asian Games, Eyes Glory in Women’s Event

Goa’s ace windsurfer Katya Ida Coelho has been selected to represent India at the 2026 Asian Games, marking another major milestone in the career of one of the country’s leading women windsurfers.

According to the selection list, Coelho has been named in the Indian contingent for the Sailing discipline, where she will compete in the Women’s Windsurfing event. The official list identifies her as a female athlete representing India in the event.

Coelho’s selection comes after a strong showing in the Asian Games selection trials earlier this year. She topped the women’s iQFOiL category at the trials conducted as part of Sail India 2026, finishing ahead of several of the country’s leading sailors.

The achievement is particularly significant for the Goan athlete, who has battled injuries, equipment challenges and limited access to resources during her career. During the 2026 trials, Coelho also overcame an equipment setback after breaking her mast but continued competing.

Her latest selection adds another chapter to a career that has already seen her represent India at the 2014 Youth Olympics and the 2018 Asian Games. She also became the first Indian woman to compete in windsurfing at the Asian Games and has won national titles and international medals in iQFOiL.

Coelho made history in 2022 by becoming the first Indian sailor to win an international medal in the iQFOiL category when she secured silver at the International Windsurfing Cup in Pattaya, Thailand. She subsequently continued to establish herself as one of India’s prominent women windsurfers.

Her qualification for the 2026 Asian Games also carries added significance after she was controversially left out of India’s final contingent for the 2023 Asian Games despite topping the selection trials. Her omission at the time triggered disappointment in Goa, with her family and supporters questioning the decision.

Now, with her name included in the 2026 selection list, Coelho will have another opportunity to compete on the Asian stage and challenge for honours in women’s windsurfing.

The selection is also a boost for Goa’s sailing community, which has produced several prominent athletes over the years. Coelho’s brother Dayne Coelho has also emerged as a leading Indian sailor and topped the men’s iQFOiL category during the 2026 Asian Games trials.

For Katya, the selection represents the continuation of a long journey in a demanding sport where wind, waves, equipment and physical endurance can determine the outcome. Her return to the Asian Games stage will be closely followed in Goa as she looks to turn years of preparation into a strong performance for India.
