After a rough weather with the Congress in power with corruption at its peak Goans finally voted for a change “Parivartan” in March 2012 and brought the Bharatya Janata Party to power with Manohar Parrikar as the Chief Minister of Goa. In November 2014 Parrikar was promoted as a deserving candidate for the post of Defence Minister of the Union Government. We have now completed 3 years of the BJP rule in Goa but nothing has changed.
A minister is an elected representative of the people belonging to the ruling party and has to work in conjunction with other colleagues to carry out day to day administration of the state according to the procedures laid down in the Constitution of India. However the ministers in Goa and across our country elevate themselves to monumental figures, make unwanted statements and yet get away with whatever they say. There should definitely be some code of conduct so that ministers refrain from making personal, racial and religious statements.
The present ministry of the Goa Government is already embroiled in making unwanted statements by ministers. These are the statements of the members of the Legislative wing of BJP Government whose main duty is to enact laws.1.Ban bikinis, short skirts and pubs 2.India is a Hindu nation and I am a Christian Hindu 3. Lesbians gay bisexual transgender 4. Some people are born due to a mistake committed by God.5.They should not be sitting in the sun as they will turn dark and it will be difficult for them to get suitable bridegrooms These are unwanted, undemocratic statements which were telecast by the national media and brought the Goa Government in national limelight.
Now comes a recent shocking statement by Lata Dhavlikar wife of Deepak Dhavlikar Minister for Fisheries and Boilers. She goes on to add “Western culture causes rape and that Hindus should not send their children to Convent schools”.
Incidents of rape are on the rise, largely owing to the fact that women have adopted western culture. Needless to mention Mrs. Dhavlikar aims to promote a unique blend of culture which is not that of Hindutwa. Many Hindu families send their children to schools run by nuns and while inviting proposals for their daughter in marriage make a specific point to add the words “Convent educated”. Mrs Dhavlikar is clearly trying to divide the society on religious lines and gain attention at the cost of blaming the western culture. She should know rape is universal and western countries have adopted though stringent laws to deal with the rapists and protect their women. Instead of making irresponsible, malicious and malignant statements on rape and western culture. Mrs. Dhavlikar as a WOMAN should make all out efforts to protect the dignity of each and every woman in India and to stop the menace of rape and gang rape which is gone beyond limits by writing to the Constitutional Authorities. Further Mrs. Dhavlikar should make all out efforts to educate the society to stop infant female foeticide which is on the rise in almost all parts of India and in all sections of the society.
A Congress spokesman termed the statement as that of a sick mentality. The statement of Mrs. Dhavlikar has to be condemned by all sections of the society.
