ETHICS BYPASSED

Few will realize that the health care system is our country is one of the most corrupt in the world. In the medical profession, there are certain codes of ethics, which all the doctors have to follow. One among them is that a physician shall not give or receive any gift or bonus in consideration of return for referring or recommending of any patient for medical, surgical or other treatment.

However, most if not all, the pathological labs that are run in our country are directly connected to the doctors, who have a special agreement with the labs of charging commission for every patient sent to them thereby increasing the cost of treatment which is normally much lower than what is charged.
Another of such code is that the prime object of the medical profession is to render service to humanity, reward or financial gain is a subordinate consideration. Again, all the major pharmaceutical companies have direct or indirect contact with all the leading medical hospitals to use their products in return for certain percentage of commission to them.
India is one of the largest exporters of medicines to foreign countries. However, the price of the drug exported is much lower than what is sold in our own country. One more of such code is that the physician should neither exaggerate nor minimize the gravity of the patient’s condition. Here the patient will be sent to do all the tests which at most times are unnecessary with a approved doctor of the physician’s choice with whom he or she has an agreement of certain commission for every customer sent.
However, like in all other countries, there are organizations in India as well to keep a look on such malpractices by the doctors. One of such is the Medical Council of India. However, any punishment for such transgressions in India so far is unheard of. Nevertheless, let us hope the Medical Council wake up from its slumber and perform their duties as required of them.
