This is about the democracy existing in India. We say India is the largest democratic country in the world, is it true or is it only you in books. Literacy is the most important thing when democracy is concerned when literacy is high democracy works better, if you see the literacy in India it is very low specially in Northern & Eastern parts. Politicians used people in such a way that some places they even controlled them with no education because they know very well if people get education then they won’t vote for them. They know to influence voters with money and alcohol. When politicians buy votes for 500 rupees does democracy exist in India?
As Goa was ruled by Portugul we have a strong Portuguese influence. I met many people who were born in Goa when Portuguese were here and according to them Portuguese dictatorship was ten times better than Indian democracy. They say they were very safe from robberies, murders etc. Everyone was afraid of the law, people were trusted the judiciary. Judgments were proper and fast, punishments were extreme, corruption was not seen etc.
My father always used to say Portuguese being from different nation never discriminated or hurt us but Indians being our own made us suffered, cheated and robbed us.
After liberation ther were only two political parties in Goa one UG and the other was MGP. Corruptions was much less. Both the parties had different opinions but worked for the benefit of Goans. We had quality leaders like Jack Sequeira, Bandodkar, etc. who worked for the benefit of Goans. The style of working was simple and friendly, everyone knows about Opinion poll & we Goans got our own identity.
For the country to progress, population plays a very important part and as we know our population has crossed China’s nearly 5 years back. China has a strict check on population. Everything is registered there. It is not possible to control the population here because this is a so-called democratic country. We can only advertise maximum 2 childrens and that’s it. So our politicians used our democracy in wrong ways and if you go deeply, you feel that democracy is not for us, we need 100% literacy.
