During my childhood, the only pets that people kept were parrots that talked, imitating their masters. They were kept in cages hung in a prominent place, ensuring that the guests did not miss them. It was said the wings of these birds were often trimmed to prevent their flight to freedom. The proud owners would exhibit the rare abilities of their pets to the guests, who were suitably impressed.
Some people owned dogs of the indigenous breed. A cute-looking puppy would be brought from a friend’s house, whose bitch had delivered many young ones. Most family members would treat it as a proud possession. As it grew up, word would be spread that it was a ferocious dog that did not spare intruders. It had its cage behind the house, where it would be kept throughout the day and released only at night to roam in the compound and guard the house. The thieves gave those houses a wide berth. Even though the dog was considered a member of the family, it was taboo to allow dogs inside the house as they were considered unclean.
The nuisance of street dogs is present in most parts of the country. In states where the killing of cows is prohibited, their clever owners leave the unproductive cows on the streets and in housing societies, unlike in other states where they may disappear. These cows can be seen waiting outside the gates of houses at lunchtime, knowing that the women will feed them. They are not only fed but also touched reverently by them, hoping that their pious deeds will be noted by those in charge of the world after death. The street dogs can also expect some leftover food from these houses.
Keeping pets like dogs and cats is an accepted way of life in the West. Some people also keep fish and guinea pigs as pets. It is usual to find single men and women with pets for company. Carrying a pet dog or cat in one’s arms and sharing the bed and pillow with the pet are common. As they are fully vaccinated and checked regularly by the veterinary doctor, they are not bothered by the germs they might carry. Animal activists ensure that they are well looked after.
Pets are a huge responsibility, requiring care like children. They are regularly taken out for a walk. When the owner leaves for work, sufficient food and water are left for the pet, that has also been given toilet training. Now there are enough hostels, and trainers of pets in several countries. Shops catering to their needs, like food items, leashes, bedding, and other necessities, are also there.
Some well-to-do people in our country have started keeping pet dogs, though not all spend money on training them. Boards warning people to be cautious about a particular breed of dog inside are displayed prominently at the gate. This new trend is giving the neighbours some tense moments, too. One resident of our society has a dog that barks loudly at odd hours. When the aged owner takes it out for a walk in the evening, it relieves itself anywhere it likes. It occasionally pulls the master holding the leash forward and throws him to the ground.
