Your editorial “Almost 5 years later, the Vasco child rapist still roams free” (September 9 ) rightly points out how our criminal justice system overlooks many crimes in society affecting children and punishment to the guilty becomes non-existent. Whether in the case of a minor girl raped in her Vasco school toilet four and half years’ back or in the very recent Gurugram reputed school of a class 2 boy sexually abused and killed, the pattern are the same raising concerns so much so that parents will fear sending their children to schools henceforth for learning and emancipation from ignorance.
These are not minor matters and time has come for all stakeholders parents, teachers, the Principal of the schools, the non-teaching and auxiliary staff not to let such horrors happen within their precincts which not only tears educational institutions but also damage the fabric of our society. If such a thing recurs periodically law enforcement machinery must be very strict for speedy and impartial investigation to nab the real culprit and associates and justice system so stringent and immediate as to create fear among the derailed in society.
We have to defeat the very method of life which promotes love for the Blue Whale episodes, the attacks and killings of individuals like Gauri Lankesh, sexual attacks on girls and women and putting an end to assaults upon children. An enlightened society with liberal values must be our aim and mission not a pathological society based on crass individualism, total unconcern towards society with love for lucre and propensity to sex. Today our outward appearances may appear on the surface polished but deep beneath is the devil in us. Our civil society is largely becoming conformist and our country remains shamed due to rapes and lynching activities against soft targets and those we are motivated to consider ‘ dangerous.’
Assaults against children and minors are not only heinous crimes but are insults to liberal consciousness, humanity and true Godliness and religiosity. The much-hyped New India cannot emerge out of this filth and will be a damp squib. The State Government must re-open the case of the young girl violated in Vasco school, so also the School and authorities in Haryana must act concertedly to punish the culprit who extinguished the young life for vicarious pleasure.
We need to punish all those who commit crimes against an individual and society. A mass pressure is imperative to make that happen, the pillars of democracy have failed to ensure us a just society.
Just feel how one’s condition can be if a son is snatched and a girl’s life put to infamy. There can be no compromise with the unhealthy, corrupt and the insane. A thousand mutinies are required in favour of the truth.
