Questions over Rohit’s place in India’s long-term plans have intensified in recent weeks, with reports suggesting that the senior selection committee has already informed the veteran opener that he is unlikely to feature in the team’s roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The selectors are believed to be looking towards the future by investing in younger opening options, with Yashasvi Jaiswal among the players reportedly being considered for a permanent role at the top of the order.

Despite the growing chatter, Rohit has not publicly indicated any intention to step away from the format. According to Kaif, the 39-year-old has effectively conveyed a simple message to the selectors: if they believe it is time to move on, they will have to make that decision themselves.
Speaking about Rohit’s situation, Kaif suggested that the Indian captain has no plans to voluntarily end his ODI career. Instead, he believes Rohit wants to continue making himself available for selection and leave it to the decision-makers to determine when his international journey should conclude.
The debate over Rohit’s future gained momentum during India’s ODI tour of England. Ahead of the series, reports claimed that selectors had begun planning beyond the experienced opener as preparations gradually shift towards the next 50-over World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
The speculation only intensified after Rohit managed a slow-paced 26 off 47 deliveries in the second ODI at Cardiff. His cautious innings drew criticism, with many questioning whether the veteran still fits into India’s evolving approach in the format.
As rumours gathered pace, several reports suggested that the third ODI at Lord’s on July 19 could be Rohit’s final appearance in India’s ODI colours. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) swiftly dismissed those claims before the match.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that no decision regarding Rohit’s ODI future had been taken and urged against treating speculation as fact. His statement effectively put to rest reports that the veteran batter had already played his last match in the format.
Even so, uncertainty remains over Rohit’s long-term future as India begins planning for the next World Cup cycle. With younger players pushing for opportunities and selectors expected to gradually refresh the squad, competition for places is only likely to increase.
For now, Rohit Sharma has remained silent on retirement speculation, while Kaif believes the veteran has made his stance clear.
