The Supreme Court had sent to gallows the 4 men convicted in the infamous Delhi Nirbhaya gang rape case of 2012 on the May 6, 2017 and hardly a week later on May 9, 2017, another spine chilling case of rape and brutal murder of yet another 23-year-old woman has taken place in the Rohtak region of Haryana State, her body was dumped at a secluded place and dogs have bitten parts of her mutilated body. It is alleged she was gang-raped by 7 men and the chilling reports have emerged following post-mortem on her body, her face was smashed beyond recognition and sharp edged objects may have been inserted into her private parts.
Sonia Gandhi Congress President expressed deep shock and outrage at the brutal gang rape and murder of the young woman, like wise all the legislators and members of Parliament who take oath of allegience to the Constitution should equally express their shock and dismay and demand the President and the Prime Minister to act swiftly to initiate tough measures in punishing the perpetrators of such heinous crimes. The Constitution describes India as welfare state where all people cutting across community, caste and creed can live happily. If the Constitution is not upheld in letter and in spirit, rapes as they are taking place now will continue unabated and it will be a murder of democracy. India has already lost its credibility as many foreign nationals have been raped and murdered and the International Community may deter its nationals from visiting India sooner or later.
Nirbhaya case of 2012 had taken place during the UPA regime but judgement delivered by the Supreme Court during PM Modi’s tenure and again the gang rape of Rohtak in Haryana took place on May 9, 2017 just over 2 weeks away, of Modi government completes 3 years in office. But what is more surprising the present Lok Sabha has a strength of 42 women Parliamentarians belonging to different parties but not a single attempt has been made by women Parliamentarians to safe guard the honour and dignity of women in India.
