It was a soul searching few days back while travelling towards Panjim. A colloquy with the driver left me wondering in deep thoughts. Actually, what he said made sense and I would not hesitate to say words of wisdom!!!
Having spoken about the children, he stated: they are so bored at home. Everyday listening to the videos, yes, whole year round, they have lost interest. That zest, keenness, excitement and competitive spirit has died down. No doubt, the Institution has ample of activities and curriculum, which the students have to display from home, say competitions, etc. To do it from home the children specially the pri-primary students miss what they once enjoyed and had been a part of. They miss the physical approach of the teacher -student-relationship. The first grip of the pencil held in hand by the teacher-pupil. The small children have suffered and become the worst victims of the online classes. To tell you sincerely he said my children knew the numbers, the alphabets, rhymes… Now they have forgotten and don’t listen to us!

Secondly, the Education System itself is wrong. I am sorry to say this, he admitted. See, I have done my graduation but due to no jobs I am running this taxi business. Where are we going with everyone learning the same things and in the end has no direction, no value for what we studied over these 15 years? Reckless learning, over burdening of homework, bags with books? Why does the Education system burden the students to learn that which they are not interested in? That history and geography! Why can’t we train from young age children interested in particular fields, fields of their interest, they take pleasure in and being someone what they want? Say those interested in hospitality, plumbing, electrical, catering, art, media and communications, mechanics, engineers, doctors, etc. and definitely, we would get trained people and not what we have today! Someone works as a helper and after two three years, becomes the Boss, keeping inexperienced bhumiputras!!!
I have a friend who teaches his son at home and says I don’t want to waste his energy learning that which he is not interested in!
Another person, a Physio is of the opinion that the Education System has to change. As consequences of the offline classes have had very bad impacts. My uncle’s son, who is in the fifth standard is all the time with the mobile, seen moving both of his thumbs which means he is either chatting or playing games. If he was attending classes or listening to the talks than his fingers would not move so fast! What I learnt today about the Facebook, Instagram, the children know these things already and even have their own profile pic, which gradually will have very bad effect or repercussions in the future.
The greater and worst consequence of the offline classes has been the board results declared in the academic year 2020-2021, with most of the schools getting 100% results. Students who once not fared well even in the test were seen in the first class list!!! Who are the losers and gainers only time will tell?
