The insistence on the government at the Centre to try and make Aadhaar Card mandatory for availing of centrally-sponsored social welfare schemes, opening of bank accounts, linking of Aadhaar card to Driving Licence and asking Telecom companies to link Aadhaar with mobile numbers is an attempt to impose what even the Supreme Court has ruled that Aadhaar Card be not made mandatory but optional. It is always that anything that should be done be led by example. Why is that the Prime Minister, the Cabinet ministers, the MPs and the CMs, state cabinet ministers and the MLAs do not first without exceptions themselves subject to being identified by Aadhaar Cards? The Supreme Court has categorically ruled that Aadhaar bio-metrics should be revealed if there is an incidence of criminal activity. This ruling seems to be fair and is in consonance with the very idea of the Unique Identification Authority of India who had incorporated the bio-metrics for making of the Aadhaar Card. If the main leaders in India agree themselves it is also possible that every citizen and resident of India should give their DNA samples and this can also be made compulsory, but this has to be accepted by every leader in the country including the president of India.
The SC should once and for all give a binding ruling that the Aadhaar Card is optional and not mandatory following which the Central government should accept it and stop being pushy on the people of India. No double standards should be adopted on the issue. A reputed Indian magazine has reported that 131 top Indians who have fled the country are being sought for extradition but only one extradition process has been achieved. Why this double standards by the government when dealing with the other citizens, when the Centre cannot bring to book scamsters, black money holders, fraudsters, money launderers and other criminals who have fled the country? It is noticed that MPs and MLAs multiply their wealth when elected but no one tracks them down for disproportionate income over and above their normal sources. The Centre should not adopt double standards but know that they should first follow the law and then only impose it on the other citizens and residents. Lead by example, don’t discriminate.
