Road safety week – a farce

Let me bring to your notice that the Road Safety Week is nothing but a farce. Nothing has changed nor will there be improvement in traffic regulatory systems if we do not bring to the notice of the concerned authorities to come down heavily not only on traffic violations but everyone who violates rules like the builders who have to see that all their buildings have ample parking places for their occupants in their buildings instead of these people parking on roadsides. Fine these builders, as it has been made mandatory that they keep a provision for the same.
Secondly let me bring to the attention of the traffic authorities that many people speak on their mobile phones on the highways even though we have police patrol cars. These people are never caught but only hamper other traffic users as they go on speaking on their mobile phones and continue driving in the middle of the roads in a reckless manner which causes fatal accidents.
Broadening of roads is also a futile exercise. Even if you have a six lane road, trucks, cars and all vehicles will still park on either sides of the dividers making the roads the same width as it was before and hampering traffic movement specially on the highways. Why are people who park on roadsides not fined? Take for example the Khareband-Cavelossim road, see how many of these vehicles are parked on the roadsides. The reason being the commercial buildings have no parking place and vehicles are parked on the roadside as builders have not made any provisions for these commercial building owners to park their vehicles in their own premises.
Go to Calangute, the same thing is happening there. Go to the newly beautified Parra road and you will find the same violations of people parking their vehicles on the roadsides. Go anywhere in Goa and the same thing occurs. Fatal accidents happen because of these violations and nothing is done to bring these violators to book. We should have stringent laws to book these offenders, laws which we sadly do not have even in this year. With technology detection of violations becomes easier but not in Goa.
