We all know it very well that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. There are a few of us who often mistakenly equate this celebration to Santa, decoration, carols, sweets and parties. By now with a lot of video messages, talks and sermons from preachers, priests and scholars we know that Christmas is about celebrating the incarnation of Jesus. I also happened to watch many web series this lockdown and one of the best was “The Chosen”. This series showcases Jesus’ life very beautifully, especially the birth narrative seems so real.
The title reads “This is the best Christmas” it’s no sarcasm or some play of words. I am genuinely saying that this is the best Christmas and if you have any doubts let me explain.

All know that Jesus was born in a manger and that’s the reason we spend so much of our energy and time making a crib. It’s not that Joseph was extremely poor; they had to move to Bethlehem because they had to register themselves for the census conducted by the Emperor. Everyone had to move back to their native land to register themselves. Thus Bethlehem was crowded and since Joseph didn’t have a house there he had to look for a temporary dwelling. Joseph belonged to the ancestry of King David, thus he, along with his family had to migrate to Bethlehem. Similarly this year we have seen mass migration of people from urban areas to their respective native places. People moved due to these Covid crisis, but this also served as a reminder of where we really belong and also of our relations.
The birth of Jesus was announced first to the shepherds, they are the poor ones and those often neglected by the society. During this pandemic we have seen how good-hearted people going out of their way to help the poor. Jesus would definitely be happy with this attitude of generous service, as that is one of the reasons He came to earth. To serve and not to rule and dictator the way we often witness leaders and Kings.
Jesus came to preach the kingdom of God; where all live in love and concern of the others. Jesus asks each one of us to change our hearts, reflect over our lives and to do good. We had a lot of time during the lockdown to introspect and this fear of the pandemic also made us realise the shortness and importance of life. I personally witnessed so many people who have made good use of their time; using their talents to the best of their ability and also spending some quality ‘alone time’.
We all know that Christmas has become a very commercial celebration. The Lord wants a change of heart and attitude, not just external show. This pandemic to a certain extent has forced us to do what Jesus would want us to do. Let’s limit our external celebration and live up to the true spirit of Christmas. Let’s love, care and share.
