Who will Bell the Cat?

“There comes a time when one must take a position, that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right” said Martin Luther King Jr.

Once again Goa is in the news but not for good reason. It is sad and nauseating to read the dailies and the social media trolls. ‘Jiyo aur dusro ko jinne do’ kabhi aapne sune hoga. Lekin hamara sarkar jinna muskil kar raha hai – for the public and the elected representatives those not belonging to their fold or other political parties.

We have read so much of the blame game over these last five six years and as of now in the current political fiasco. Targeting the authorities of the Goa desk and those at the centre. In the political world there aren’t any enemies. It is only the media hype that shows them as enemies. If not the rebel leader of Congress would have been out the second day, he divorced the party.

Goans are known for shopping and changing clothes, shoes, etc, as they love shopping. No wonder we have people from other States doing business in Goa and have turned out to be successful businessmen. To the extent, one doesn’t mind travelling from Margao to Palolem to run their business stores.

So in business, commodities are on sale and they can be purchased only when one’s pocket are full. Together with the commercial world the politics in India has been a commercial trade or business. Business to woo the elected representatives with great perks and also entice with a whopping price with harassment of unending calls. Of course, as we see the footpaths of Panjim filled with stalls selling their products, there were those elected representatives on sale besides those whose files are marked in red.

If the government wants to prove their majority and increase number of seats in the Parliament and Assemblies, they need to do it the right way without trying to destroy other parties. Without harassment to the elected representatives and prove your worth in fighting elections on your own party symbol and not buying the MLAs with crores of rupees.

We hear of ED raids. Why not those responsible look into the call details of our government and those who have broken the trust of the Congress voters? Those that have filled their coffers and become rich by a booty of Rs 50 crores? There were also those who were offered Rs 70 crores but those with right conscience did not fall prey to the lure and rejected the enticement with loyalty and the trust with which people voted for them. The defectors had to bear witness by being examples of faithful legislators. The people of Goa who wanted a change in the government even went to the extent of electing the defectors of the Congress and joined again with oaths and promises.

Is the decision taken by the defectors right? Did they take it because their conscience told them, it is right? As one of them says: “God asked me to join BJP.’

What next? Can the susegad Goykar rise from their slumber and tell these greedy defectors who Goykar are? And as the saying goes: “who will bell the Cat”?
