Security has been stepped up at actor-politician Vijay’s Chennai residence following a tragic stampede at his Karur rally, which left 40 dead and over 100 injured, according to Tamil Nadu government sources. Authorities cited fears that public anger could target Vijay and his party, TVK.
The DMK-led state government criticized the rally for violating safety guidelines, including insufficient arrangements for food, water, and crowd control. Vijay arrived seven hours late, and the rally continued even as people fainted and ambulances were reportedly delayed.
A judicial inquiry has been ordered, and police have filed cases against TVK officials, including general secretary N Anand, joint secretary Nirmal Kumar, and Karur West district secretary VP Mathiyazhagan, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
