TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee was attacked during a visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal on Saturday, where he had gone to meet families affected by alleged post-poll violence. According to reports, protesters threw eggs and stones at Banerjee while raising slogans against him, creating a tense atmosphere in the area.
Visuals from the scene showed security personnel surrounding the TMC leader and escorting him to safety. Banerjee was seen wearing a helmet as security forces attempted to shield him from the attack.

Following the incident, Banerjee accused the BJP of orchestrating the assault. He alleged that the attack was politically motivated and criticised the absence of adequate police presence at the location. The TMC leader claimed that the attackers intended to cause serious harm and said the entire incident had been captured on camera.
Banerjee stated that his spectacles were broken and his clothes were torn during the confrontation. He further claimed that he narrowly escaped injury because he was wearing protective headgear.
The TMC MP said he would inform both the High Court and the Governor about the incident and indicated that legal action could follow. He also maintained that his party had informed the police in advance about the visit but alleged that authorities failed to respond appropriately.
Police personnel and central security forces later reached the area and escorted Banerjee away from the tense situation. The incident has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the TMC and BJP, with leaders from both sides expected to continue trading accusations over the episode.
