India denies mediation as Trump reiterates conflict-halt claim

US President Donald Trump has again claimed that he helped defuse tension between India and Pakistan earlier this year by threatening both countries with a 350 per cent tariff. Speaking at the US-Saudi Investment Forum, Trump said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called him to say they were “not going to go to war.” Trump repeated that he warned both nations that the US would halt trade unless they stepped back from escalation. India has denied any external mediation and maintains that the understanding on cessation of hostilities was achieved through direct talks between the two militaries on May 10. Trump also said Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had thanked him for “saving lives.” Since May, Trump has repeated his version of events over 60 times, even as New Delhi insists no third-party role was involved.
