Kolkata: In a major boost to India’s defence self-reliance initiative, the Indian Navy on Sunday commissioned three indigenously built warships — INS Dunagiri, INS Sandhayak, and INS Agray — at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) shipyard in Kolkata.
The induction of the three vessels marks another milestone in India’s journey towards designing, developing, and manufacturing advanced military platforms under the country’s push for indigenous defence production.

At a time when strategic competition and security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) continue to intensify, the commissioning of these warships significantly enhances the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy while underscoring the nation’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Milestone for Indigenous Shipbuilding
The three platforms have been designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed entirely at the GRSE facility. According to the Navy, more than 75 percent of the equipment and systems installed on the vessels are of indigenous origin, highlighting the success of India’s domestic defence ecosystem.
The commissioning reflects a significant transformation from earlier decades when the country relied heavily on imported naval platforms. Today, a large share of India’s frontline warships and support vessels are designed and built domestically, showcasing the growing capabilities of the Indian shipbuilding industry.
Defence officials noted that the induction of INS Dunagiri, INS Sandhayak, and INS Agray will enhance the Navy’s surveillance, operational, and maritime security capabilities, while also contributing to the government’s vision of achieving greater self-sufficiency in defence production.
The event is being viewed as another important step in strengthening India’s maritime preparedness and reinforcing its strategic presence across the Indian Ocean Region.
