Even as the numbers point towards a comfortable majority for the Mahayuti Alliance in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has asserted that the contest for the Mumbai Mayor’s chair is far from settled.
In the elections to India’s richest municipal body, which has an annual budget of over ₹74,000 crore, the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 wards, while its ally, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, secured 29 seats. Together, the Mahayuti alliance reached 118 corporators, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 114 in the 227-member civic body.

However, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) finished a strong second with 65 wards, and Sanjay Raut claimed that with the support of alliance partners, their tally stands at 108, just six short of the halfway mark, keeping hopes alive for a dramatic turnaround.
Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which tied up with the UBT just weeks before the polls, won six seats. The Congress, contesting in alliance with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), secured 24 seats. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won eight wards, the Samajwadi Party two, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP three, and the Sharad Pawar faction one.
With post-poll negotiations set to intensify, the battle for the Mumbai Mayor’s post promises to be a high-stakes political showdown despite the Mahayuti’s numerical edge.
