Trump administration Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has issued a stern warning to India, saying it must “play ball with the President” and stop actions harming US interests. Highlighting India and Brazil, Lutnick called for market reforms to facilitate smoother trade relations.
India currently faces high tariffs from the US, including 50% on certain goods and a 100% duty on patented pharmaceuticals, putting Indian exporters at a disadvantage. Lutnick also mentioned that unresolved trade negotiations with major economies like India and Brazil remain a priority for the US.
The warning comes as India-US trade talks resume. A delegation led by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer and discussed ways to achieve an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial trade agreement
