Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of India Chip Pvt Ltd, a 60:40 joint venture between HCL Group and Foxconn, at Jewar, Greater Noida, on Saturday. Speaking virtually, PM Modi emphasised that self-reliance in technology, particularly in chip manufacturing, is crucial for building a developed India. He noted how the Covid-19 pandemic exposed the fragility of global chip supply chains, halting factories and economies, and said India aims to turn that challenge into an opportunity.
The semiconductor facility will produce display driver chips, process 20,000 wafers per month, and create over 3,500 direct and indirect jobs, while attracting local and international partners. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and UP CM Yogi Adityanath highlighted India’s rising role in electronics manufacturing and Jewar’s potential as a tech hub. HCL Chairperson Roshini Nadar and Foxconn President Bob Chen said the facility will serve both domestic and global markets, strengthening India’s self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem.
