PANJIM: The North district administration on Friday razed 10 structures at Merces, built in contravention to the amended provisions of the Goa Land Revenue Code, amidst huge police protection. Several residents raised repeated objection to the demolition drive but the authorities continued with the exercise citing the amended Act.
The North Collectorate had recently issued 17 notices across different survey numbers in the village, followed by the demolition activity on Friday. An official source said that around 45 more structures will be razed in the coming days.
Last year, the Goa Legislative Assembly had passed the Goa Land Revenue Code (amendment) Bill, empowering the collector to take immediate action against illegal land filling in any low-lying area, khazan land, land under coastal regulation zone, water body or environmentally sensitive area.
Sources said under the amended Act it is not mandatory to issue show cause notice to the respondent.
