Sanguem MLA Subhash Phal Desai said that new land measuring
10 lakh square meters has been finalized in Sanguem for IIT, and the government
will make an official announcement within a month.
He further said that IIT land identification is in the final
phase, and government machinery is working on it. The government may not be
able to tell the date of laying the foundation stone, as there are a lot of
formalities that are to be completed, he stated.
Additionally, the minister asserted that old land was
rejected by IIT officials as the land was not sufficient. The IIT officials
rejected the prior land because a significant portion of it was a mountain
slope, not because the public objected to it.
Residents of Sanguem, especially farmers, have been
protesting against the IIT camp in Sanguem since the project was proposed. The
farmers from Sanguem staged a protest in September 2022, claiming that the
government was acquiring land for the IIT Goa
