10-tonne beef arrives in State

MARGAO: A 10-tonne consignment of fresh beef arrived in the State for the first time on Saturday since the state experience acute shortage of the meat over the last one month.

Since this is the first time that fresh beef has come into the state from across the borders, the consignment arrive a little late on Saturday evening. Cold storage owners, however, procured their requirement from the van which was parked in the wholesale fish market.
Chairman of the Goa Meat Complex Lyndon Monteiro said that the GMC has acted as a facilitator to resume beef supply into the state. “Today, the consignment has come little later since this is the first time that the supply has resumed after the shortage. Things will fall in place in a day or two and fresh beef will be supplied to the cold storage owners as per their requirements”, he said.
Replying to a question, Lyndon said the GMC is not into the business of procuring or selling fresh beef in the state, adding that the GMC has only acted as a facilitator to get the beef into the state.
Meanwhile, a delegation of beef traders has called on the GMC Chairman with a plea to resume slaughter operations at the Goa Meat complex. The delegation has been invited for discussions on Monday.
