PERNEM: Two Drishti lifeguards rescued ten tourists — 7 men and 3 women, who were nearly washed away at Arambol beach on Saturday.
According to sources the incident took place at around 1.10 pm, when two Drishti lifeguards Ramkrishna Shakshele and Manoj Parab secured and rescued 10 victims.
Drishti lifeguard Ramkrishna was controlling a crowd of around 60 who had ventured into the water at Arambol beach. A 10-year-old boy who had also ventured into the water along with his family was caught in a rip current and started drifting seawards. A group of five male tourists who were swimming in the same zone rushed to rescue the boy. Simultaneously, the family members of the boy comprising of a man and three women spotted him in trouble and rushed to his aid.
All nine of them who were going to rescue the boy also got caught in a strong rip current and were in distress. Lifeguard Ramkrishna spotted the incident and immediately relayed a message to the tower and called for a Jetski.
Paddling a distance of 50 mtrs, Ramkrishna reached towards victims. Meanwhile, Drishti lifeguard Manoj and Dattaraj Korgaonkar also reached the spot. All ten victims were secured and rescued by the two lifeguards and brought back ashore. Two out of ten victims felt uneasy and faced breathing problems. They were then immediately shifted to Community health center Tuem. One of them is presently undergoing treatment at District Hospital, Mapusa.
