MARGAO: During the major clean-up drive held across several beaches of coastal Salcete on Saturday, volunteers collected 1,000 kg of garbage

On the Cavelossim-Mobor Beach stretch, the drive was organised by the Village panchayat of Cavelossim, and saw the participation of over 400 people, including school children.

Sarpanch Dixon Vaz said that staff from all big hotels in the area, students and teachers from the Holy Cross Educational Institute, local fishermen and villagers participated in the drive.

He appealed to the people to keep the beach clean, and also to the student community to be sensitive towards nature.

Meanwhile, at the State government level, several cleanup drives were held at Colva, Majorda, and Benaulim, where hundreds of volunteers from across Salcete taluka gathered on Saturday morning, to mark International Coastal Cleanup Day.  At the end of the day, volunteers had collected more than 1,000 kg of trash from the beaches.

The International Coastal Clean-up Day is an initiative of the United Nations’ Environment Programme and has been conducted by the Indian Coast Guard since 2006. It is the world’s largest one-day voluntary effort to clean beaches.

Last year, a total of 71,220 kg of maritime litter was collected, nationwide.
