PANJIM: At least 10,000 jobs are up for grabs in private industries in Goa as migrant labourers have left for their native places in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said.

The Chief Minister revealed that he realised during the lockdown that thousands of non-Goans were working in private industries. “We realised 5,000 people from outside Goa working in Goan industries when companies applied for passes during lockdown,” he said and added, “Over 80,000 labourers have left Goa. Goan youth can grab this opportunity.”

Sawant said that industry associations have to take the initiative. “I am not saying do a labourer’s job but Goans can take up jobs of packers and other jobs. There could be at least 10,000 jobs,” he said.

He said the COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected the job scenario in the country but it can be the other way round in Goa. “This is a win-win situation for Goa,” he said.

Further, Sawant stated that transportation is a big issue for industries. “The State government will provide transportation to industrial employees if they employ Goans. State can provide transportation through KTC in three shifts,” he said.

Sawant was speaking after launching the online notification of vacancies at Secretariat Porvorim.
