PANJIM: About 11.63 lakh vehicles including 7.30 lakh two-wheelers registered in State and which are older than 15 years are eligible for scrapping as per the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Policy of Goa, 2023.
Director of Transport Rajan Satardekar said that 11.63 lakh vehicles which are more than 15 years old were as per the official data of the Department up to September 30, 2022, and added that another 30,000 to 40,000 old vehicles would be added to the data as they would cross the age limit.
He said that 600 government vehicles that are older than 15 years can be scrapped first as per the policy of the Central government. Also 40 KTC buses have now gone off the road and they would be de-registered and scrapped.
Besides, 7.30 lakh private two-wheelers, 3.13 private cars, 5400 public transport including private buses and stage carriages, 25,000 taxis, 3,500 auto-rickshaws and 52,000 goods vehicles that are more than 15 years can be de-registered and scrapped.
Satardekar said that the owners whose vehicles would be scrapped will be issued a certificate by an authorised scrapper and the government will offer 25 per cent discount on a new vehicle purchase in the State.
Meanwhile, the Department of Transport has invited applications for setting Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) in the State as mandated in the policy.
According to Satardekar, initially only one registered vehicle scrapping facility will be set up in the State and the party should have minimum two acres of area.
On May 19, the State government announced Registered Vehicle Scrapping Policy of Goa, 2023, in a bid to curb pollution and as per the Government of India policy.
